Yep, you read the title correctly, I’m sharing a Whole Wheat Tortillas recipe, I’ve perfected these delicious whole wheat tortillas, and they’re organic, too! These are simply amazing! I’ve even had people shocked to find out they were homemade. I make them with organic ingredients and fresh ground whole white wheat.

I found a recipe in the booklet that came with my tortilla press. It was a whole wheat tortilla recipe, but it called for half of the flour to be white flour. I decided to use all whole wheat flour instead and they turned out amazing.
I use this tortilla maker to make my tortillas. It works great! I do have to admit it took a couple of times to get used to cooking with it. But, now, I love it! It has made making organic homemade tortillas for my family so much easier and less time consuming.
As always, I use my Bosch mixer for all my dough and batter needs! It really helps to make a great dough for the tortillas!
Some Tip and Tricks
I do have some tips for making the perfect tortillas that I have learned along the way while trying to perfect my organic whole wheat tortillas.
-
Make sure the dough isn’t too dry. The dough may be a bit more moist than you would expect, but it works a lot better in the press when the dough is moist. If it’s too dry, when you press it, the tortilla will kind of “squeal” and “burst”. It’s a little crazy, but the edges actually crack and kind of fall apart. It’s a little hard to describe, but it is super frustrating when your tortillas keep doing this. It also does this if you don’t let the dough sit long enough after dividing it into balls.
- You’ll want to let it rest for at least 30 minutes, 60 minutes would be better. The less time you let it rest for, the smaller and thicker you’ll have to make your tortillas, because they’ll just explode or burst when you try to press them more.
- Don’t over cook them. I only leave mine in the press for about 15-30 seconds. I didn’t think this was long enough at first, but when I cooked them for longer than this, they would harden after they cooled and kind of cracked and broke instead of rolling up nicely. So disappointing.
One Last Thing
You don’t have to have a tortilla maker to make homemade tortillas. You can also roll the dough out with a rolling pin and cook them on a griddle. They will still turn out amazing, it will just take a little more time and effort.
I hope you try this recipe so you, too, can enjoy making homemade whole wheat tortillas for your family!
Prep Time | 45+ Minutes |
Cook Time | 15-20 Minutes |
Servings |
9-10" tortillas
|
- 3 cups Whole Wheat Flour
- 1 teaspoon Salt
- 1/3 cup olive oil
- 1 cup warm water
Ingredients
|
|
- 1. Combine flour and salt in a large bowl or mixer.
- 2. Add oil and water and mix until soft dough forms.
- 3. Knead or mix with a dough hook for about 5 minutes.
- 4. Divide dough into 12 equal pieces, roll into balls, cover with plastic wrap, and let rest for at least 30 minutes.
- 5. Roll each ball into about a 10" circle. Place on a griddle at medium high heat and cook on each side for about 20-30 seconds on each side. There should be slight bubbling as they cook.
- Or if you wish to use an electric tortilla maker, place ball of dough into press and press down until dough reaches edges or it starts to "squeal" (it's hard to describe the noise it makes, but when you hear it, you'll know what I mean). Quickly open press and flip tortilla. Press down again until it reaches the edges or "squeals" again, and cook for about 20-30 seconds.
These are fantastic. I had given up on making tortillas because they were either too thick or exploded. Thanks for the tips.
Thank you! They are amazing, aren’t they?! We just love them.
This is my go to recipe. Thanks for sharing!
